HELLO,

I am THIJS. I founded Mathelios because high-quality annotated medical imaging data is hard to come by. Expert annotation takes specialised knowledge that clinicians rarely have time for, and automated tools, however powerful, still struggle outside the data they were trained on.

I am a neuroanatomist and neuroscientist with over ten years of experience in medical imaging research and more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, focused on the anatomy and imaging of the injured and diseased brain.

WHAT I WORK ON.

CREATING

anatomically precise ground truth from scratch.

CORRECTING

automated algorithm output.

RESEARCHING

how we see and measure injury

I research manual and AI-assisted segmentation methodologies in medical imaging, with a particular focus on neurotrauma.

TEACHING

on anatomical imaging, AI and segmentation methods.

I teach neuroanatomy, neurotrauma, radiological neuroanatomy and medical image segmentation, including the opportunities and limitations of AI.

THE NAME.

Mathelios combines several personal and symbolic elements. "MAT" comes from Matthias, the Latin form of Thijs (Matthijs). "HELIOS" honours my grandparents Helena and Jose (Ioseph), whose warmth, support and values continue to inspire, together forming MATHELIOS.

Helios is also the Greek god of the sun, bringing hidden structures to light, much like segmenting grayscale medical images.
