Hello,
My name is Thijs. I founded Mathelios because high-quality annotated medical imaging data is hard to come by. Expert annotation takes specialised knowledge that clinicians rarely have time for, and automated tools, however powerful, still struggle outside the data they were trained on. I am a (neuro)anatomist and scientist with over ten years of experience in medical imaging research and more than 60 peer-reviewed publications, focused on the anatomy and imaging of the injured and diseased brain.
I mostly work on
creating anatomically precise ground truth from scratch and correcting automated output. Alongside this, I research and teach segmentation methods and neuroanatomy, with a focus on neurotrauma and on what artificial intelligence can and cannot (yet) do.
The name Mathelios,
"Mat" comes from Matthias, the Latin form of Thijs (Matthijs). "helios" honours my grandparents Helena and Jose (Ioseph), whose warmth, support and values continue to inspire. Together, this forms Mathelios.
Helios is also the Greek god of the sun, bringing hidden things to light. That's what 3D segmentation does with grayscale medical images.
